As you start out with a SEM campaign and have selected your keywords, it is necessary to watch the traffic and CTR you get. This is necessary for good SEO because you will need to understand what is happening with each one and notice what kind of traffic it is attracting.

In most cases, single keywords will probably be too wide for practical use. It will give you traffic, but they will also send a lot of non-buyers your way, too. This will give you a very low conversion rate and probably a lower page rank as well.

Refining your keywords is crucial if you want to have a very successful SEM campaign or a high ranking Webpage. With PPC campaigns, you must eliminate useless keywords and refine the ones that are producing good results. Adding negative keywords is essential to reduce unwanted traffic even further.

Your list of negative keywords will probably continue to grow over time as you discover more and more words that may be attached to your keywords, but that are not necessarily supportive of your product or other interests. You may want to consider a keyword unusable if after some time you do not receive a decent CTR to other pages. Of course, it may also indicate that your landing page may need some tweaking, too.
